Chapter 20
She continued stomping down the hallway.
Overbearing, bossy, arrogant, cocky son of a bitch. What other words can I come up with for the asshole?
There were probably more synonyms but her pissed-off brain couldn't think of them at the moment. All that reading she did and yet not one good insult could be found. She was disappointed in herself.
Lost in her thoughts she almost ran right into Leslie who was pacing back and forth at the other end of the hallway.
"Did he kick you out?" Leslie was in mama bear mode, ready to attack whoever had the nerve to upset her best friend. It was clear by the scowl on her face. Any other time, Charlotte would be cracking up at the sight and cheering her friend on.
Side note: If the two of us ever got arrested, it would be because my stupid mouth would be encouraging the bad behavior. That thought did make her chuckle a bit.
"What's so funny?" Pregnancy made for a testy best friend.
"The way my mind works sometimes," she answered with a shrug. "And to answer your question, no, he didn't kick me out per se. I stormed out when Mr. I-think-I-know-best tried to tell me to go back to Boston."
"I knew you wouldn't give in." Leslie triumphantly pounded her fist against her other hand. "Do I know my best friend or what?" She turned to Zack with a glimmer in her eyes.
To Charlotte, she said, "I was just explaining to Zack what transpired while he left to call his boss."
"He probably just thinks it will be safer for you," Zack tried to reason.
"That's exactly what he said, but I call bullshit. I wouldn't run if it were Leslie and I sure as hell am not going to just because he demands it." She examined her nails. A woman's universal sign that she was done with the conversation.
"The two of you are both equally stubborn," Zack chuckled. "I might just stay for the entertainment."
Slowly lifting her head, she scowled. It didn't seem to affect him in the slightest because he continued to chuckle at her.
I must be getting rusty. I'll have to fix that.
Leslie smacked him in the chest instead. As usual, her best friend had her back. Faking surprise, Zack rubbed the spot Leslie hit, trying to keep the smirk off his face.
"While watching them fight it out sounds fun and all, can we be serious for a minute? If Charlotte wants to stay, then it should be her choice," Leslie chided her husband.
"I'm not disagreeing with you. I would never do such a thing." Charlotte snorted at his attempt to placate his wife. He gave her the side-eye before continuing on. "But I would do the same thing in his position. I would want you safe, and if that meant away from me, then so be it." Pulling Leslie into his side, he finished in a softer tone, "Pretty sure that's exactly what you did when you left Texas."
Charlotte watched the exchange, she felt like an interloper, but the conversation was about her after all.
